Halloween Pet Safety: Tricks, Treats & Keeping Your Pets Out of Trouble

Halloween is full of fun costumes, decorations, and plenty of treats, but what’s exciting for us can sometimes be confusing or even dangerous for our pets. Between bowls of candy, the constant ringing of the doorbell, spooky decorations, and costumed visitors, there are plenty of new things for your pet to encounter.

The good news? With a little preparation, you can make sure Halloween is fun for the whole family, including your four-legged family members!

At Twin Tails Veterinary Hospital, we want to help you enjoy the holiday while keeping your pets safe, comfortable, and out of trouble. Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind this Halloween.

Keep Candy Out of Reach

It wouldn’t be Halloween without candy, but those sweet treats should stay far away from curious noses.

Chocolate and sugar-free treats can be toxic to pets. Make sure candy bowls, wrappers, and trick-or-treat bags are kept somewhere your pet cannot reach them.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Chocolate of all kinds
  • Sugar-free candies and treats containing xylitol
  • Candy wrappers, which can cause stomach or intestinal problems if swallowed
  • Trick-or-treat bags left on the floor or within easy reach

Even if your pet has never shown much interest in candy before, Halloween can bring a whole new level of temptation!

If you think your pet has gotten into something they shouldn’t have, contact Twin Tails right away.

Create a Safe Space

For some pets, Halloween can be more stressful than spooky.

The constant doorbell ringing, unfamiliar voices, costumed visitors, and people coming and going can be overwhelming, especially for pets who are nervous around strangers or easily startled.

Before the trick-or-treaters arrive, consider setting up a quiet, comfortable space where your pet can relax away from the activity.

Make sure they have:

  • Their bed or favorite blanket
  • Familiar toys
  • Fresh water
  • A comfortable, quiet place to settle in

Keeping your pet in a separate room can also help prevent them from slipping out the front door when visitors arrive.

Sometimes the best Halloween plan for your pet is a cozy night away from the action!

Be Cautious With Decorations

Halloween decorations can make your home look festive, but some can also pose a risk to curious pets.

Glow sticks, candles, and electrical cords can be hazardous if chewed, swallowed, or knocked over.

To help keep your home pet-friendly:

  • Keep electrical cords secured and out of reach
  • Place decorations where pets cannot chew or knock them over
  • Avoid leaving candles unattended
  • Consider using battery-operated candles instead of open flames
  • Keep small decorations away from pets who like to explore with their mouths

A spooky decoration is fun. And while we love your pets, a trip to Twin Tails because your pet decided to investigate it? Not so much!

Check Costumes for Safety & Comfort

Who doesn’t love a pet in a Halloween costume?

If your pet is joining in on the costume fun, safety and comfort should always come first.

Before heading out for photos or festivities, make sure their costume:

  • Fits comfortably without being too tight
  • Does not restrict breathing, movement, or vision
  • Does not interfere with walking or using the bathroom
  • Does not have small pieces, strings, or accessories they could chew off or swallow

Always supervise your pet while they are wearing a costume, and if they seem uncomfortable or stressed, it’s perfectly okay to skip the costume altogether.

Sometimes their natural look is the cutest costume of all!

Keep Halloween Fun for Everyone

Halloween doesn’t have to be stressful for your pets. A little planning can go a long way toward preventing accidental candy consumption, reducing stress, and keeping curious pets away from potentially dangerous decorations.
